WALTER KEITH ARMISTEAD - (1785-1845) - Army Engineer, born in
Virginia. Graduated at West Point (1803), served as
superintending engineer of the Norfolk, Va., defences (1808-11),
assigned to Niagra frontier as Chief engineer on outbreak of
War of 1812. Served as superintending engineer of the
defences of Chesapeake Bay (1814-18), appointed chief of
Engineers, and inspector of West Point (1818-21). Served in
the war against the Seminole Indians.
