THOMAS LINCOLN CASEY - (1831-1896) - Army Engineer, born Madison
Barracks, Sackett's Harbor, N.Y. Graduated West Point (1859),
assigned to fortification and river and harbor construction and
in command of engineers on Puget Sound (1859-61). Served during
Civil War as staff engineer in Department of Virginia,
constructing fortifications on Maine coast and with North
Atlantic squadron. Subsequently employed in fortification
construciton, studied torpedo construction in Europe (1873),
completed Washington national monument (1884). Apppointed
brigadier-general and Chief of Engineers (1888-95). Erected
Library of Congress building.
