CYRUS BALLOU COMSTOCK - (1831-unknown) - Army Engineer, born West
Wrantham, Mass. Graduated at West Point (1855), worked on
construction of forts, made acting assistant professor of natural
and experimental philosophy at the Military Academy (1859), and
ordered to Washington to serve in defenses of Capitol (1861). In
army of Potomac (1862), transferred to army of the Tennessee, and
later (1864) made senior aide-de-camp to Grant, serving in the
Richmond, Ft. Fisher, and Mobile campaigns. Aide to general-in-chief
in Wasington (1866-70) and afterward chief of the geodetic survey of
the Great Lakes. Member of Mississippi river commission, elected
member of National academy of sciences. Retired (1895) as colonel in
regular army and brevett brigadier-general.
