RENE EDWARD DE RUSSY - (1790-1865) - Army Engineer, born Hayti,
West Indies. Graduated at West Point (1812), served in War of 1812,
brevetted Captain for gallantry at the Battle of Plattsburg. Was
assistant engineer in construction of Rouse's Point, N.Y. (1816),
superintendent of West Point (1833-38). At start of civil War,
constructed the fortifications of San Francisco Harbor. Brevetted
major-general (1865).
