LOUIS LEBEQUE DU PORTAIL - (unknown-1802) - Army Engineer, born in France. One of four French engineer officers chosen by Benjamin Franklin for Continental Army. Commissioned Colonel to the Corps of Engineers upon arrival. On November 17, 1777, promoted to Brigadier-General, and to Major-General on November 16, 1781. Was with Washington at Battle of Monmouth. Directed engineering operations at seige of Yorktown. Returned to France in 1782.
