AMOS ALFRED FRIES - (1873-unknown) - Army Engineer, born Vernon
County, Wisconsin. Graduated at West Point (1898), served in
Philippine Islands as engineer officer with Pershing, was
director of military engineering at the Engineer's School,
Wasington, (1911-14), engaged in fortification and river and
harbor work, including Dalles-Celilo canal connecting upper and
lower Columbia River, dredging Columbia River and construction of
fortifications at its mouth. Present harbor at Los Angeles was
his work. In World War I, was successively director of roads,
chief of gas service and chief of chemical warfare service as
Brigadier-General. Major-General (1925) and chief of chemical
warfare service after service as commandng officer of Arsenal,
Maryland.
