GEORGE LEWIS GILLESPIE - (1841-unknown) - Army Engineer, born
Kingston, Tenn. Graduated at West Point (1862). Assistant
engineer of Army of Potomac, and in 1864 was chief engineer
of Army of Shenandoah. Lt. Colonel (1865), accompanied
Sheridan to New Orleans as chief engineer. Later was ordered
North, and engaged in fortifications and river and harbor
inprovements. Transferred to Oregon (1878-81) in charge of
inprovements of Columbia River and lighthouses. Many other
inportant assignments and then Brigadier-General and chief of
engineers (1901-04) and member of Army War college in
Washington.
