JOSEPH KING FENNO MANSFIELD - (1803-1862) - Army Engineer,
born New Haven, Conn. Graduated at West Point (1822), was
Zachary Taylor's chief engineer during Mexican War,
fighting at Ft. Brown (Texas), Monterrey, and Buena Vista.
With outbreak of Civil War, was commissioned Brigadier-
Geneeral of volunteers and given command of Depart of
Washington; captured Norfolk (1862) and was appointed
military governor of Suffolk, Va.; mortally wounded at
Battle of Antietam.
