JOHN NEWTON - (1823-1895) - Army Engineer, born Norfolk, Va.
Graduated at West Point (1842); engaged in coast defense and
waterway improvements, and ws chief engineere of Utah
expedition (1857-58). In Civil War became brigadier-general
of volunteers, fighting in Seven Days' Battles and at battles
of Antietam and Fredericksburg. Promoted major-general of
volunteers, fought at Chancellorsville; succeeded Reynolds in
command of 1st Corps during last stages of Battle of
Gettysburg. Served under Sherman at Peach Tree Creek.
Subsequently was engaged in strengthening defenses in
vicinity of New York Harbor. Ws Chief of Engineers (1884-86).
Commissioner of public works in New York City (1887-89), and
president of Panama Railroad (1888-95).
